Three Stars
Nightingale by Cathy Maxwell was an interesting read. The book was definitely a serious and, at times, sad story. It seemed that Dane and Jemma's love story was destined to be one of complications. I had some issues with Dane having to sacrifice so much and giving up so many of his dreams. When Dane and Jemma were young they were in love and hoped for a lifetime of love. Unfortunately, Jemma marries a wealthy and titled man. Dane was neither titled nor wealthy and really just wanted to live a simple life as a vicar with Jemma. After Jemma's choice to marry a wealthy and titled man he changed his plans completely and traveled to India to make himself a wealthy man. Despite the hard ache between them they never stopped asking what if... When they finally have a chance to confront their pasts and their choices some moments are not as romantic and idealistic as they would have liked. Overall, I enjoyed the story and I enjoyed the creativity of the plot. I felt frustration towards both characters at one point in the story but ultimately wanted for them to end up together. Excerpt #6
Perhaps he
should let Whiting run him through?
The idea
had appeal. Dane picked up the glass and drained it of the precious amber
liquid.
The footman
rapped on the door to signal he had returned with this uninvited guest. Dane
pushed both the will and his whiskey glass aside before calling out, “Enter.”
The door
opened slowly, and the footman, dressed in blue-and-gold livery with a powdered
wig on his head, stepped into the room. “Sir Dane, your guest.”
He moved
back. There was a moment’s pause, a space of time, three ticks of the clock,
and then the woman walked into the room and Dane stopped breathing.
Before him
stood Jemma Carson, the widowed Lady Mosby, looking more beautiful than ever.
