There was something different in the way he looked at her today. His light blue eyes held a predatory gleam.



Impossible. The man had no interest in hunting her. It was wishful thinking on her part.



"Why are you here, Sean? I don't remember you coming into the library before." She tilted her head as she considered his lack of visits. "Do you have a library card?"



"I wanted to talk to you about your book club," he said. "I want in."

"True." Sean nodded. "Time to broaden my horizons, don't you think?"



"No. What are you up to, Sean?" She couldn't figure out what his angle could be.



"When's your next meeting?"



She straightened her shoulders. No, no, no. He wasn't going to invade her book club. She wasn't going to have him ask provocative questions or slice through her arguments. Okay, so that would be welcome in most book clubs, but she wasn't going to share her thoughts with him about these books. "It's by invitation only."



"Then invite me."



She shivered at his low and rough voice. "No."



"Why not?"



"You wouldn't understand." Their meetings were her safe place. A time to bounce ideas off her friends and ask questions. After plenty of Sunday dinners with Sean, she knew the book club's discussions would completely deteriorate into a battle of wills if he was there.



Sean rested his chin against his hand. "Are you worried that I would learn all your secrets? Find out all the tricks and tips from your readings?"



It was a concern. Knowledge was power. These books emboldened her and she was learning how to reach out and take what she wanted. But the bold side of her wasn't fully formed, and she couldn't discuss these subjects with him until it was.



"I want to join the book club," he said firmly.



"No." Never. Not going to happen.

If regrets were ships, she’d have enough to fill the Clyde. Yet she had love as well. On balance, she had more love than regrets. She loved her mother, Duncan, Lily, and Mabel. They were all her family and would always have a spot in her heart. She adored Lennox. She always had. She knew she always would. 
The sun faded behind Glasgow as if embarrassed, leaving a blushing sky behind. The Clyde reddened, mirroring the sky, bustling with activity as day turned into night: a barge belched upstream, a ship slid out of dock. Slowly, ships became shadows and spires in the darkness.

Karen Ranney began writing when she was five. Her first published work was The Maple Leaf, read over the school intercom when she was in the first grade. In addition to wanting to be a violinist (her parents had a special violin crafted for her when she was seven), she wanted to be a lawyer, a teacher, and, most of all, a writer. Though the violin was discarded early, she still admits to a fascination with the law, and she volunteers as a teacher whenever needed. Writing, however, has remained the overwhelming love of her life.

“Not so fast.” He rose and clasped her upper arms. “I find you…” After a brief pause, he pulled her roughly to him so she was wrapped tightly in his arms. Shirley Kennedy was born and raised in Fresno, California and has lived in such diverse places as Denver; Houston; Torrance, California; Bogota ,Colombia; and Calgary, Alberta, Canada where she received a BSc degree in Computer Sciences at the University of Calgary. She worked as a computer programmer/systems analyst for several years before she went back to her first love, writing.

In her early career as an author, Shirley wrote traditional Regency romances, one for Ballantine, the rest for Signet. Later on, she branched into other genres including Heartbreak Trail, a western romance (Camel Press), The Last of Lady Lansdown, a not-so-traditional Regency romance (Camel Press), and Deadly Gamble, a contemporary Las Vegas mystery (Inkspell Press). I really enjoy historical fiction so this book instantly caught my eye.  I also really liked the title of the book. I find it to be funny and eye-catching.  When I started reading  "Death of a Dishonorable Gentleman" I could see that wit and mystery would be a huge part of the story.  The author writes many fun and interesting characters. The task of finding the killer was well done and I thought the author kept the story light but still worth unraveling.

I was excited to learn this was the first in a series.  I love the time period covered in this story and always learn something new about it. I personally plan to keep my eye out for the next book in the series. Fun and suspenseful.

TESSA ARLEN, the daughter of a British diplomat, had lived in or visited her parents in Singapore, Cairo, Berlin, the Persian Gulf, Beijing, Delhi and Warsaw by the time she was sixteen.
