"Kika the Upside-down girl" by Jessica Tudos was such a sweet read.  I loved the message behind the story as well as the rhyming. The illustrations were very beautifully done and conveyed the sweet message behind Kika and her unique way to view the world around her.  Kika loves to live upside-down.  Others, more notably her parents don't understand why she likes to be upside-down. Kika searches for a group that will understand her.  She finally finds this acceptance in a gymnastics class where others like to be upside-down also. I really liked the search that Kika was on to find herself and others that accepted her.

Kika’s Legacy by Jessica Tudos

Kika is this adventurous girl who loves to flip, flop and cartwheel her way through life, which is a funny way to think about things – how often do we get to explore the world from a new perspective, and upside-down one? Often I think we are used to living right side up because that is what we expect, that is what we are taught, and that is what “most” people do. But are we really “most” people? I’d venture to say no! I believe we are all a bit upside-down in some way, and it takes a certain confidence and courage to choose another way of being in the worlds as the pressure to conform can be so powerful. I think that’s the biggest takeaway I’d like readers to leave with after reading about Kika’s journey – being different is hard, and it is more than okay, it is something to be celebrated!

At a recent book reading a young girl came up to me and told me she wanted to go to the Olympics too (I competed in the Olympics at age 15). I asked her why and she told me that it was “something to be proud of” and that she wanted her friends to see her on TV. Good reasons! When I asked her what she thought of Kika the Upside-Down Girl, she told me she liked the unusual way Kika did things, and how she never gave up even when she was sad and all alone. She then immediately flipped herself into a handstand telling me that, “the world looks better this way…the other way is so boring.” I had to agree with her there. I also wanted to motivate her to keep exploring the world in her own way, even when the going gets tough, which it will. 

If Kika can empower kids to feel more confident to truly be themselves, as the author, I am thrilled! It makes me think, “How often do we actually put ourselves in a new position to see things differently?” New perspectives can help us solve problems, enhance relationships, become more motivated, take on new adventurous and so much more. About the Author

Lucinda Riley was born in Ireland and during her childhood travelled extensively abroad, particularly to the Far East to visit her father.



Moving to London she became an actress working in film, theatre and television. Five years ago she designed and built a house on the island of Koh Chang in Thailand, where her father had purchased land many years before. Her passion for history combined with her love of travel, and Thailand in particular, inspired her to write her novel Hothouse Flower, published by Penguin in November 2010.



She currently lives in Norfolk and France with her husband and four children.

Behind the Mask by Carolyn Crane

When I saw all the fantastic reviews for “Behind the Mask” by Carolyn Crane I could not get my hands on it fast enough. I was so excited about this story. I loved the diversity of the characters and the suspense plot. Although I read a lot of romance I usually don’t read a lot of suspense because I find that usually either the suspense falls short or the romance does. That is my humble opinion. Regardless I was eager to read Carolyn Crane because her books have such great reviews.

When I started “Behind the Mask” the fourth in the series, I was a little disappointed. The heroine, Zelda, is disguising herself as her twin sister in order to bring down a famous drug cartel. Zelda and her sister are not close but she is stepping in to help.

Ok, a couple of issues I had with the story. In my current reading slump, I put this story down a couple of times and came back to it. One, it started overly dramatic. The story begins and Zelda is taking tips from her drug- addicted sister so she can pass herself off as a whore. Two, the hero and the heroine meet about 20 % into the book. Three when they do meet they had zero chemistry. The buildup was good but their exchanges were so flat that I had to force myself to keep reading. Hugo Martinez is a tough guy. He knows the dangerous situation they are in and finds it in his heart to help out Zelda even though he thinks she is just a prostitute.

Although the plot seemed interesting I found Hugo and Zelda to fall flat. Their first sexual experience together was so hard to wrap my mind around that I thought it ruined the upcoming moments for them. I’m sure that fans of Crane will love this book, for me, it fell below my expectations.

About the Author

Diann was born in Indiana in 1971, but she spent the majority of her childhood in Newport News, Virginia. She majored in English literature at the University of Virginia, but she never wrote creatively until, after the birth of her second child in 2003, she sat down to write The Outer Banks House. She soon followed up with her second book, Chasing Eternity, and in 2015 the sequel to her first novel, Return to the Outer Banks House.



Diann has vacationed on the Outer Banks since the age of three. She even married her husband of 10 years, Sean Ducharme, in Duck, North Carolina, immediately after a stubborn Hurricane Bonnie churned through the Outer Banks. Conveniently, the family beach house in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina provided shelter while she conducted research for her historical fiction novels.



She has three beach-loving children and a border collie named Toby, who enjoys his sprints along the shore. The family lives in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia, counting down the months until summer.
