"Beloved Crusader" by Vijaya Schartz was a great combination  of history, fantasy and adventure coupled with romance. I enjoyed the romantic tension between Pierre and Palatina. I loved that the author made both the hero and the heroine equally strong and were a great match and challenge to each other. The author also threw fantasy in the mix which I really enjoyed and enhanced the story.  The religious conflict between Christians and Pagans added to the drive of the story and I found it very informative and enlightening.  Overall, I though that the story worked on many different levels. One the writing was very good, the storyline interesting and the characters memorable.

He turned her in his arms and lifted, reclaiming her lips. She automatically wrapped her legs around his waist, pushing her dampening center to his warmth. Without loosening his hold on her mouth, he strode to the fireplace where he gently settled her on the soft carpet. He stretched out alongside her, running his palm over her curves as she faced him.

As his eyes met hers, she rested her palm against his cheek. “I’m afraid.”

“Ach, lass. Dinna fash yerself. I will never hurt ye.”

She shook her head. “No. I know you won’t hurt me. I’m afraid of what this means if we continue.”

“’Tis simple, darlin’, and something we both kenned would happen. I want ye for my wife. I want to bed ye every night for the rest of our lives, see yer wee body swell with my bairn.”

“But I’m still not sure,” she whispered. This was a serious step and the commitment she would be making by allowing it to continue needed consideration. Callie Hurton quickly became one of my go-to authors when I want a unique and fun read.   I've read Hutton before and always find her stories to be unique and refreshing. I loved Lady Sybil and Liam.  I also loved the chemistry between them. I really enjoyed "The Highlander's Choice"and will continue to read Hutton.

Books like Essie's Roses by Michelle Muriel are why I love reading. This was such a fantastic read, my heart ached and I couldn't put it down. Essie Mae is a colored girl, she starts off by risking her life to save her friend and also her mistress daughter.  Stories like "Essie's Roses" are literary works of fiction. The story was so beautifully written, the pacing so well-done. Once I started I could not put it down.   The author changes the points of view during the story. Muriel really made it work because I was provided a very thorough perspective of the story.  Set during the Civil War, Essie and Evie-her best friend- form a beautiful friendship.  Their love for each other was so beautiful and their innocence so precious.  This is one of my favorite books from this year!

Michelle Muriel holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts, magna cum laude, and after graduating, she worked as a professional actress, a member of Actors’ Equity and The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists for almost twenty years, doing theater, voice-over, and commercial work. Doctor Margaret travels alone to India to be with her parents at the American Presbyterian Mission at Futtehgurh, and then on to her posting at a hospital in Delhi. There she has to not only overcome work pressures, but also deal with her intimidators and intrigues of the Mughals, at the Delhi Red Fort.

Margaret's tormenter since her childhood, Captain Albert, also joins a British regiment bound for service in India. The Russian, Captain Count Nicholai, whom Margaret had met in Crimea, also arrives in India under the guise of a French physician. The events leading up to the Indian Mutiny/Rebellion that breaks out in 1857 profoundly affect not only Margaret's life, but also of those who love her and others’ who wish her harm. Also, mixed-up in the bedlam is one of the Delhi King, Shah Zafar’s, Red Fort’s Guards sepoys, Sharif Khan Bhadur, the grandfather of Doctor Wallidad, an American doctor.

The Azadi Series covers the exciting events and turmoil that enflamed India from 1857 to 1947, and led to her independence. Those incidences engulf the characters of this story at that time, and then later their descendant's lives, again in the 1960s.

This book, Doctor Margaret in Delhi by Waheed Rabbani was an easy book to like. One I really enjoy reading about India and it's history. I'm often frustrated with myself with how little I know. It's history is so interesting and fascinating. I really liked how Rabbani combined the elements in this story. The pacing was great, the characters interesting and the setting fantastic. Although the second book in the series, I did not find that I missed out although it would have been nice to read the previous book first. Dr. Margaret Wallace was a fantastic character to read about. She was an inspiring heroine. I really enjoyed reading about the cultural conflicts with the English and the tensions that arose. The attention to detail that the author used in this story made it come alive and I was quickly transported to India with Doctor Margaret. I'm  looking forward to reading more in  this series and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a strong heroine in a fascinating time period with an equally fascinating country.

About the Author

Waheed Rabbani was born in India, close to Delhi, and was introduced to Victorian and other English novels, at a very young age, in his father’s library. Most of the large number of volumes had been purchased by his father at ‘garage sales’ held, by departing British civil service officers, in the last days of the Raj.

Waheed attended St. Patrick’s High School in Karachi, Pakistan. He graduated from Loughborough University, Leicestershire, England, and received a Master’s degree from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada. While an engineer by profession, Waheed’s other love is reading and writing English literature, which led him to obtain a Certificate in Creative Writing from McMaster University and start on his fiction writing journey.

Not aware of everything that is happening, she becomes the target of an individual with murderous intent. Her heart soon becomes entangled though her father intends to wed her to another. The turmoil inside Karin deepens and reflects the turmoil of her homeland, on the brink of the Hussite Wars.

The minute I heard about this book and saw it's cover I was interested.  I couldn't wait to read it and learn about the Czech Crown, although I love the Tutors it was a nice change to learn about the Hussite Wars, which I unfortunately knew very little about.  At first, the pacing of the story seemed a little slow but once it picked it I was instantly interested in Karin and her struggle to be her own person but at the same time hold true to her duties to the crown. I absolutely loved Karin and found her to be a very interesting heroine. She was strong and vulnerable which I thought was a great combination.  This is the first time I read Sara R. Turnquist but I would be interested to read more by her.  Finally, I'm not sure if the author plans to add to this story but if she did I think I would feel better about the ending.  Overall, I really enjoyed the historical aspect of the story, the setting and the time period covered were refreshing and interesting to read about.  I wouldn't necessarily characterize this as a romance although there were some romantic elements. If anyone is looking for a refreshing and interesting read about the Czech crown this is a very worthwhile read.

"Sword of the Gladiatrix" was a very enthralling read. I loved the action packed scenes in the book. I thought that the author was able to balance a good paced plot with very interesting and memorable characters. The strong female characters were an essential part of the story and they really made the entire story.  Usually there is so much attention placed on the gladiators it was refreshing to read about women warriors.  The story is also a romance between two women and their search for love in the mist of a very savage time.  Overall, this was an enjoyable story and I would not only recommend it but also plan to keep it on my book shelf and re-read in the future.
