safe.

Six year old Bradley Cooper is about
to change everything.

PROTECTING CAROLINE
by Susan Stoker
Book 1, SEAL of Protection Series

Matthew “Wolf” Steel hated flying
commercial. Luckily his job as a Navy SEAL meant he didn’t have to do it very
often. He’d been unlucky enough to be assigned a middle seat on the cramped
jet, but fortunately for him, the woman next to him was willing to switch seats
with him. Hoping for a relaxing flight, Wolf was pleasantly surprised at the
good conversation and sense of humor the woman had as they flew 36,000 feet
over the countryside.

When Caroline boarded the plane to
Virginia to move across the country for her new job she never expected to be
seated next to the hottest guy she’d ever seen. She also never expected he’d be
so easy to talk to. She knew he’d never be interested in talking to her if he
hadn’t been trapped in the seat next to her, but it was a nice way to spend a long
plane ride.

Neither Wolf nor Caroline were
prepared for a terrorist hijacking of their plane, but if Caroline thought that
would be the last time she’d see, or need, Wolf, she’d be sorely mistaken.

In 1875 England, a young man, Jack Brennan, from a large and impoverished Catholic family refuses to be pushed into the priesthood and runs away to fulfil his dream of becoming a teacher.

Jack falls in love with Eliza Hewlett, but his dreams and plans are thwarted when his landlord's daughter, Mary Ellen MacBride, falsely accuses him of fathering the child she is expecting.

Rather than be forced to marry his accuser, Jack decides to run away to America with Eliza. Just as they are about to sail, Jack is arrested and dragged from the ship, leaving Eliza alone en route to New York with just a few shillings in her pocket.

Three Stars
Jack and Eliza were a great couple! I'm currently hooked on Downtown Abbey and it reminded me about many of the couple struggling to be together and beat the odds! Jack and Eliza face many obstacles and they have many challenges thrust on them as they try to be together. I really loved them as a couple and I also liked that the author constantly kept me on my feet.  She provided many plot twists that I did not see coming. Life dealt both of them unjust circumstances but they stood strong and never gave up on each other.  I found this to be an uplifting book!

Praise

"The story is different, original and touching. It's interesting to read how the lives of Jack and Eliza unfold in different countries. The plot is powerful, the characters are well sketched, memorable, and their personalities will remain in the minds of readers even after they finish the story. It's a story of love loss and tragedy; a heartbreaking and moving tale where readers will wish to see Jack and Eliza reunited and happy together. The narration is descriptive; it also speaks about the society that existed during that age and pulls readers into the story. It's well written and the story is not predictable, making it a engaging read.” -Readers’ Favorite (5 Star Medal)

BREAK MY FALL by JESSICA SCOTT

BREAK MY FALL by JESSICA SCOTT

For Josh Douglas, broken by the impotent rage of combat and loss, pain is the only thing that feels real until he meets Abby Hillard. In Josh, Abby sees a puzzle for someone else to solve even though she deeply feels the pull to free the darkness that cloaks him. BREAK MY FALL by USA Today Bestselling author, Jessica Scott, is the second book in an emotional new adult series about a group of young veterans adjusting to life away from the military. They've got a lot to learn about life away from war - and college may or may not be the place for them to learn it.

Title: Break My Fall
Author: Jessica Scott
Series: Falling #2
Genre: New Adult
Release Date: February 15, 2016

Synopsis:
Violence. I’m addicted to it. It’s how I feel alive. It’s the only thing that’s real any more.
And now I have to sit around and discuss it like it’s physics or calculus.
I can’t do it. I can’t pretend that it’s some sterile academic topic.
Violence isn’t sterile. It isn’t calm. It’s pulsing. It’s alive.
It’s my drug.
Until I met Abby, I never wanted anything beyond the next fight.
Never considered that I might finally find a way back to the land of the living.
Now? Now I find myself dreaming of a woman with golden eyes.
But I can never be with her. Because I am not whole. And I never will be again.
But I cannot stay away. And loving her might finally be what breaks me.

Excerpt 1

I lean on the bar next to him. Side by side. Cradle my head in my hand and just wait. Casual. Pretending my lungs aren’t too tight and my body isn’t too aware of the size and strength in this man.
He lifts the glass to his lips and just like last Friday, I am mesmerized by the movement in his throat. Who knew something as mundane as swallowing could be so captivating?
I am not going to think about pressing my lips to the pulse in his throat. Or running my fingers down that same spot
"Want to talk about it?" How’s that for witty? I need Flirting for Dummies or something.
There is a scab over his right eye. "Are you my fairy god-therapist?"
I shrug. "Nah. Just thought I'd offer. You know, return the favor from the other night."
His lips are flat and tight. "I run off a dude hassling you, and now you get to listen to me solve all the world's problems?"
"Maybe not the world. How about just yours?" He's prickly but I'm not afraid of him. There is something about him that feels…not safe. That’s the wrong word. No, never that. But something that makes the risk…worth it. "I'm a pretty good listener."
He turns back to his drink and tosses back the remains. "It's complicated."
"Always is."
He rests his forehead against the empty glass and looks so broken and sad, it cracks the ice around my heart just a little bit.

Before queenship and Camelot, Guinevere was a priestess of Avalon. She loved another before Arthur, a warrior who would one day betray her.

In the war-torn world of late fifth century Britain, young Guinevere faces a choice: stay with her family to defend her home at Northgallis from the Irish, or go to Avalon to seek help for the horrific visions that haunt her. The Sight calls her to Avalon, where she meets Morgan, a woman of questionable parentage who is destined to become her rival. As Guinevere matures to womanhood, she gains the powers of a priestess, and falls in love with a man who will be both her deepest love and her greatest mistake.

Just when Guinevere is able to envision a future in Avalon, tragedy forces her back home, into a world she barely recognizes, one in which her pagan faith, outspokenness, and proficiency in the magical and military arts are liabilities. When a chance reunion with her lover leads to disaster, she is cast out of Northgallis and into an uncertain future. As a new High King comes to power, Guinevere must navigate a world of political intrigue where unmarried women are valuable commodities and seemingly innocent actions can have life-altering consequences.

You may think you know the story of Guinevere, but you’ve never heard it like this: in her own words. Listen and you will hear the true story of Camelot and its queen.

Fans of Arthurian legend and the Mists of Avalon will love Daughter of Destiny, the first book in a historical fantasy trilogy that gives Guinevere back her voice and traces her life from an uncertain eleven year old girl to a wise queen in her fifth decade of life.
My Review:
 Four Star
Copy received from Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours for an honest review
"Daughter of Destiny" by Nicole Eveline was a fantastic read! I'm a huge fan of Arthurian stories.  I loved that this story is from Guinevere's point of view.   I also loved how Guinevere was personalized.  Usually Guinevere's earlier years are  ignored but Eveline provides a very thorough character in Guinevere. She also provides the reader insight into her world and her thoughts.  I really enjoyed this story. Once I opened the first page  my attention was captured. I am excited to see that this is the first in the series and I can't wait to see what other adventures Guinevere goes on.  Fast-paced, exciting and insightful.

The Gilded Cage by Judy Alter

02_The Gilded CageThe Gilded Cage
by Judy Alter

Publication: April 2016
eBook & Paperback

Genre: Historical Fiction

Born to a society and a life of privilege, Bertha Honoré married Potter Palmer, a wealthy entrepreneur who called her Cissy. Neither dreamed the direction the other’s life would take. He built the Palmer House Hotel, still famed today, and become one of the major robber barons of the city, giving generously to causes of which he approved. She put philanthropy into deeds, going into shanty neighborhoods, inviting factory girls to her home, working at Jane Addams’ settlement Hull House, supporting women’s causes.

It was a time of tremendous change and conflict in Chicago as the city struggled to put its swamp-water beginnings behind it and become a leading urban center. A time of the Great Fire of 1871, the Haymarket Riots, and the triumph of the Columbian Exposition. Potter and Cissy handled these events in diverse ways. Fascinating characters people these pages along with Potter and Cissy—Carter Harrison, frequent mayor of the city; Harry Collins, determined to be a loser; Henry Honoré, torn between loyalties to the South and North; Daniel Burnham, architect of the new Chicago—and many others.

The Gilded Cage is a fictional exploration of the lives of these people and of the Gilded Age in Chicago history.
"The Gilded Cage is a wonderful recreation of early Chicago and the people who made it what it is. Central character Cissy Palmer is a three-dimensional, real, vibrant person. The Gilded Cage is fiction, but firmly based on fact—the Chicago Fire, the prisoners from the War Between the States interred in Chicago, the newcomer Potter Palmer, the explosive growth of wealth in a prairie town, deep poverty adjacent to great riches—the American experience laid bare. You don’t have to be a Chicagoan to love this book." -Barbara D’Amato, author of Other Eyes

If you thought "Six of One: A Tudor Riff" was the most fun you could have with your nightdress on, wait until you see what "Seven Will Out: A Renaissance Revel" has in store. Get ready for one 'ruff' night! Tudorphile Dolly thought that the night she spent on an astral plane with Henry VIII's six wives, learning their heretofore unknown secrets, was a one-time thing. Not so! In "Seven Will Out", Dolly finds herself back in the ether with the women of later Tudor times: Elizabeth I, ‘Bloody’ Mary, Bess of Hardwick, Mary, Queen of Scots, and Anne Hathaway Shakespeare, to name a few. They too have secrets that will turn history on its head, and comic sass that will keep you laughing. You've read all of the traditional, serious and romantic takes on the legendary Tudors. Why not try your Tudors with a new and different twist?

"Seven Will out" was a cute and fun read! It's a satirical take on the Tutor era.  The author provides funny and unique moments that might not make it into the history books.  She has a playful way of playing with the historical characters and it provides for fun and light reading

About the Author03_JoAnn Spears

JoAnn Spears couldn't decide whether to major in English or History in college. Life stepped in, and she wound up with a Master’s Degree in Nursing instead. A twenty-five year nursing career didn’t extinguish that early interest in books and history. It did however stoke a decidedly gallows sense of humor.

The story of the six wives of Henry VIII was JoAnn’s favorite piece of history. Over the years, she read just about every spin on the story that there was. It occurred to her that the one spin that hadn’t been brought to a full length novel about the Tudors was a gallows sense of humor. The Tudors certainly qualified for it, and JoAnn had plenty to spare.

The first ‘real’ book JoAnn ever read was “The Wizard of Oz”. She returned to the Yellow Brick Road for inspiration for a new kind of Tudor novel, and “Six of One” was born.

“Six of One” was begun in JoAnn’s native New Jersey. It was wrapped up in her new Smoky Mountain home in northeast Tennessee, where she is pursuing a second career as a writer. She has, however, obtained a Tennessee nursing license because a) you never stop being a nurse and b) her son Bill thinks she should be sensible and not quit her day job.

While “Six of One” is a different kind of historical novel, JoAnn is a downright stereotypical lady author. She admits to the usual cats, flower beds, needlework, and frightfully complete collections of Jane Austen and Louisa May Alcott.

When love commands, destiny must obey.

The year is AD 450. The Roman Empire wanes as the Medieval Age awakens. Attila the Hun and his horde conquer their way across Europe into Gaul. Caught between Rome’s tottering empire and Attila’s threat are the Frankish tribes and their ‘Long-Hair’ chiefs, northern pagans in a Roman Christian world, and a people history will call the Merovingians.

A young widow, Arria longs for a purpose and a challenge. She is as well versed in politics and diplomacy as any man … but with special skills of her own. The Emperor Valentinian, determined to gain allies to help stop the Huns, sends a remarkable envoy, a woman, to the Assembly of Warriors in Gaul. Arria will persuade the Franks to stand with Rome against Attila.

When barbarian raiders abduct Arria, the Frank blue-eyed warrior, Garic, rescues her. Alarmed by the instant and passionate attraction she feels, Arria is torn between duty and desire. Her arranged betrothal to the ambitious tribune, Drusus, her secret enlistment by Valentinian as a courier to Attila the Hun, and a mysterious riddle—threaten their love and propel them into adventure, intrigue, and Attila’s camp. Rebels in a falling empire, Arria and Garic must find the strength to defy tradition and possess the love prophesied as their destiny.

Copy Received from Historical Fiction Virtual Book Tours for an honest review
When I started "On the Edge of Sunrise" by Cynthia Ripley Miller I was instantly engrossed in the story and captivated by the characters.  Arria was a worthy heroine and one that I liked instantly and was interested to see how her story would progress.  First, Arria was a great heroine. I loved her courage and strength when she had to come face to face with the difficult choices ahead of her.  Garic was her equal as a hero. He was a perfect match and at times adversary for Arria. The time period was intriguing. The historical time period of the Huns and at the same time the conflicts with the church sparked a great backdrop to the already existing tension between Arria and Garic.  Miller's pacing of the story was fantastic, she transitioned with ease and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next, how the heroes would come together.  I definitely had book hangover after reading this story but luckily it is the first in series.  I'm looking forward to the next one in the series and highly recommend this story of love and adventure.

"From cover to cover a gripping read – in all senses of the word! Grips your interest and imagination, your held breath and your pounding heart! A thumping good novel!” - Helen Hollick, USA Today bestselling author & Managing Editor Historical Novel Society Indie Reviews

"AD 450. The Roman Empire is breaking apart, and Attila the Hun has his sights set on conquering Gaul. … The love story between Garic and Arria is set against a background of fierce battles, intrigue, jealousy and betrayal. … The story weaves, twists and turns at a tremendous pace, and the characters leap off the pages, which simply keep on turning. This is the author’s debut novel, the first in her ‘Long Hair’ series. I look forward to reading more in due course. Recommended. - Marilyn Sherlock, Historical Novel Society, HNR Issue 74 (November 2015)

"On the Edge of Sunrise is a compelling epic, sure to appeal to fans of historical fiction. Forbidden love, a turbulent time period, and world-changing events combine to produce a real page-turner.” - India Edghill, author of Queenmaker, Wisdom’s Daughter, and Delilah

"On the Edge of Sunrise is a passionate and intriguing take on the often overlooked clash of three brutal and powerful empires: the Romans, Franks, and Huns. A Compelling read!” - Stephanie Thornton, author of The Secret History and The Tiger Queens
